Chapter

Seventeen

Impatient and enthusiastic, I rush past the spot where Dana stood and feel as if I’ve run into a solid wall even though nothing is there. What in the world?

Dana must be sabotaging me!

Honestly, I can't even be upset with the pooka. The kanaima is a force to be reckoned with, I'm sure. There's no way I can tackle it by myself, and I'm not going to. That's why I came out here with a team.

A team I scattered.

I’m all alone right now.

“Logan?” I call out softly, not wanting to disturb anything or anyone lurking nearby, not wanting to draw too much attention to myself. “Kayden? Medeia?”

Darius?

No one and nothing heads my way.

I test and put out a hand. There’s no physical barrier, but a magical one remains in place.

Blocking me or anything at all?

Rocks go by. A twig. Leaves. Everything but me. I don’t know if a human can pass, if another witch can… How powerful are pookas? Could Dana have made it impossible for anyone to go this way?

I’m sorry, Dana. I know you want to protect me, but I need to protect Rkyer.

It’s not romantic between us. If anything, Rkyer feels like a brother to me. I can’t say why, but I just want to be there for him. If it hadn’t been for me, he never would’ve learned what happened to him during his blackout spells.

What if that had been for the best?

No. No, he would’ve hurt or killed someone. Yes, he’s caged, but he won’t be for long. The others and I will find the kanaima, hunt it down, and slay it.

Because there isn’t any possible way this kanaima will be able to convince me to give it a second chance. This won’t be a repeat of the dragon gargoyle.

A fierce wave of anger washes over me. Nothing will stand in my way.

With a wave of my hand, I conjure wind and blast the barrier. It’s crazy. I can see the spiral of wind, see the breeze be pushed aside, but the stronger and harder I push with my wind, the more I can feel the barrier give way. Finally, I can sense that the barrier is down, and I banish my wind before it can blow all of the leaves off the trees or even some of the branches.

This time, my hand meets no resistance.

With a grin, I march forward. Hopefully, someone will come my way. Maybe Darius will join me soon. If he's that deep into a trance or however he's trying to locate the magical connection, that can explain why he didn't hear me call out to him mentally. If he's able to find that connection, he'll be along as backup shortly. I'm not about to dawdle. Rkyer needs our help ASAP.

As quietly and quickly as possible, I rush forward, my eyes open, my ears perked. I can just hear Doland’s chatter off to the left, and I pause. Should I go and get him?

Wait. There’s something up ahead. Or did I imagine it? It’s gone now, whatever it was.
